Finding the ideal timeframe
for maternity photos: the short answer.
For most expecting moms, the sweet spot is at the beginning of the third trimester, somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks. By that time, you will typically be visibly pregnant, and you will be carrying your belly relatively high since baby will not have dropped yet. At the same time, you will generally still feel comfortable enough to pose in a pretty dress. That said, every pregnancy is unique and there are individual factors to consider.
1. Are you a first-time mom?
Generally speaking, moms tend to show a little later during their first pregnancy than during subsequent pregnancies. I’ve had the privilege to capture both the first and second pregnancy of the below-pictured mom. For her first pregnancy, we scheduled her session around 32 weeks but for the second, 27 weeks turned out to be the sweet spot!
One of the first questions I get from expecting moms when planning their maternity session is: “When is the best time to get my maternity photos taken?” or “How many weeks pregnant should I be for my maternity photos?”. And this question makes perfect sense. Moms want to capture their beautifully bumping belly at just the right size, whilst also being able to pose comfortably!

2. Are you likely to give birth before reaching full term?
You might also consider scheduling your maternity photos a little earlier than the 28 to 34-week window if you are likely to deliver before full term. You don’t want to miss your opportunity to capture the unmatched beauty of your pregnancy if you deliver your sweet baby earlier than expected!
3. What vision do you have for your maternity photos?
Finding the perfect time for your maternity photos can also depend on the type of setting you want your session to take place at. If you are looking for a lifestyle maternity session at home (great choice, by the way!), then timing is relatively flexible. However, if you have your heart set on a specific backdrop (e.g. cherry blossom trees or golden fall foliage), then you might have to adjust the timing of your session, and this could mean planning it outside of the 28 to 34-week window.

Ultimately, the best time for your maternity photos depends on your unique pregnancy journey, your comfort, and the vision you have for your session. While the 28 to 34-week window is ideal for most expecting moms, factors like whether it’s your first pregnancy, the possibility of an early delivery, or your preferred setting can all influence the timing. The most important thing is to choose a time when you feel beautiful, comfortable, and excited to capture this special moment!
