How to choose the perfect location for your next photo session

9/10/2024

Choosing the perfect location for your photo session —whether it’s a family, maternity, or couple’s shoot— can feel a little overwhelming with so many options available. But don’t worry! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to pick the ideal setting for your next photo session.

1. In-home session

2. Outdoor session

On the plus side:

  • It's convenient! - Planning your session at home eliminates travel time, giving you more time to get ready—especially helpful for busy moms preparing for a family session. In-home sessions are also ideal for newborn photography, as they provide a familiar and comfortable environment for your little one. Having everything you need on hand is also a huge plus in case of unexpected messes!

  • It doesn't get more lifestyle than this! - These sessions offer a truly personal touch, capturing your home’s essence and your family’s unique dynamic. Whether documenting a newborn’s first days or the joyful chaos of young children, in-home sessions create intimate and meaningful memories.

  • Weather isn’t a factor, ensuring your session isn’t disrupted by rain or extreme temperatures.

On the down side:

  • Some tidying up is necessary. No need to start a full Spring cleaning, but decluttering key areas will help keep distractions out of your photos.

  • Lighting can be a challenge. Homes with small windows or limited natural light may require careful planning to find the best-lit areas.

  • Staying in familiar surroundings is great for family photos, but it can also be distracting for young children, who may prefer playing with their toys rather than focusing on the photo session.

On the plus side:

  • It's cost effective! Public parks and urban settings typically don’t require fees (except for potential parking costs).

  • Natural light: Outdoor lighting, particularly during golden hour, provides a soft and flattering glow for portraits.

  • A natural backdrop creates beautiful, candid moments that will make your photos feel authentic and lively!

  • Outdoor locations change across the seasons, offering vibrant fall foliage, spring blossoms, or a fresh summer feel.

On the down side:

  • Outdoor sessions are highly weather-dependent! In the event of inclement weather on the day of your session, we'll have to make adjustments or reschedule.

  • Restricted timing: Midday sunlight can create harsh, unflattering shadows. For that reason, outdoor sessions are typically scheduled in the early morning or late afternoon sessions.

  • Permits may be required for certain outdoor locations.

3. Studio session

On the plus side:

  • Some studios specialize in offering cosy and homey backdrops for lifestyle portrait sessions. This will spare you the hassle of having to tidy up your home before your session!

  • On top of this, no need to worry about unpredictable weather, shifting lighting, or outdoor distractions in a studio! Everything is under total control!

On the down side:

  • The most obvious disadvantage of shooting in a studio is that it will involve an additional rental cost.

4. A special place

If you have a specific vision for your session, please tell me all about it!! You might want your engagement session to take place in the bar where you had your first date, or to do a pregnancy announcement or a gender reveal photoshoot in a unique location to add a personal touch to it (for example in your favorite coffee shop, with a customized newspaper). The possibilities are endless, and I’m here to help bring your vision to life! Whether it’s a sentimental spot that holds special meaning or a creative concept that reflects your personality, we can work together to make your session truly one-of-a-kind.

Just keep in mind that private venues will require permission from the owner before scheduling the session.

The perfect location for your photo session really just depends on your vision, comfort, and the type of atmosphere you want to create. Whether you choose the intimacy of your home, the natural beauty of an outdoor setting, the polished look of a studio, or a meaningful personal location, each option has its own unique charm! The most important thing is that your photo session reflects who you are, and that you enjoy the experience—because when you do, it truly shines through in your photos. If you’re unsure which setting would work best for you, I’d be happy to help you decide. Let’s create something beautiful together! 💕
