Outfits play a bigger role than most people imagine in how their family photos turn out. In today’s blog, I’ll give you 7 tips to help you choose the right outfits for your next family session!

1. Choosing colors: coordinate, but don’t match!
When picking outfits for your family session, start by picking a color palette with 2-3 colors that blend well, but don't match exactly. For example, instead of dressing your boys in three slightly different shades of blue, try incorporating a mix of neutral tones with a pop of blue . This will create variety while keeping everyone's outfit cohesive.
Here are some great color palette ideas:

2. Consider your surroundings
Think about where your session will take place and choose colors that complement your backdrop, without blending in completely. Mixing neutral colors with a pop of the color that predominates in your backdrop is a great way to do it. For example:
For a family session in a forest or a park: earthy tones like sage green shorts or an olive cardigan will blend beautifully without disappearing into the scenery.
For an outdoor Fall family session: warm tones dominate the background. You might want to incorporate orange as an accent color in your outfits.
3. Define the vibe
Still unsure which color palette to pick for your family session? Focus on the vibe you want your photos to reflect. For example:
For an in-home maternity session or newborn session: you might want your photos to reflect the softness and peacefulness of this chapter of your life. Opt for pastels, whites, and light neutrals.
For a lifestyle outdoor family session with playful kids: maybe you'll want your photos to reflect all the light and energy going on. Try a palette with a more vivid and luminous color such as fuchsia or yellow.
For Winter sessions: whether indoor or outdoor, you’ll probably want your photos to feel cozy and warm. In that case, go for warmer tones and don't hesitate to layer outfits with cardigans or scarves.
4. Steer clear of certain fabrics

Some fabrics don’t translate well in photos—I’ve learned this the hard way! Complex fabrics such as nylon or tweed tend to create a distortion called moiré (funny-looking wavy lines that are totally imperceptible in real life, but definitely visible on a screen).
Instead, try to stick to soft, natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or knitwear for best results.
5. Patterns: don't think that floral dresses are a no-go!
I’ve noticed that many moms have this preconceived idea that patterns are a no-go for photo sessions, and therefore don’t dare to wear their favorite floral dress. I have to disagree with that idea! A floral dress is actually a great option for family photos, both for moms and little girls. Likewise, a striped sailor shirt or sweater on your little boy is a great choice.
That said, keep these guidelines in mind:
Stick to one pattern per outfit combo (avoid mixing florals with stripes, for example).
Say no to large logos, text, or numbers on clothing!
Be careful with tight patterns (e.g., small checks or very fine lines), as they can also cause the moiré distortion!
6. Prioritize comfort AND confidence!
Family sessions involve movement—walking on grass, gravel, or uneven ground, lifting little ones, and crouching down. So, comfort is key!
Shoes: I'd personally ditch the stilettos, and opt for short-heel sandals, flats, or stylish mules for an elegant yet comfortable look. Make sure kids' shoes are comfortable too! Family sessions are supposed to be fun — no one wants tears over uncomfortable footwear.
Dress: If you’re wearing a dress, check the length to make sure you'll be comfortable moving around and crouching down.
Keep in mind that confidence is equally important! if you feel great in your outfit, it will shine through in your photos! Try your outfit on a few days before your session to make sure you feel fabulous in it.
